Older Australians and the need for more housing options

According to a recent study, the population in Australia is aging rapidly. This is because of factors such as slower population growth and the migration drop. So what does this mean? It means that the total population of the nation is Australia is composed of older Australians. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but let us just shed some light on why this could become a problem in the future.

A rapidly aging population could mean that the number of working-age people is decreasing. When only a few people are working, the economy is affected. An economy that cannot fill occupations, especially the most demanding ones could eventually face consequences. It should not come as a surprise that a decline in the working-age population would mean that there’s going to be less productivity. The supply could, then, face a shortage of qualified workers making it more difficult for businesses to progress and expand.

However, there lies the truth that we will all eventually age so the best thing to do is to make sure that the older population will have a pleasant quality of life.

While the pandemic really made all of us more appreciative of our family and realize the importance of relationships, which actually made different generations liked living together. However, there are still things that have to be maintained, like personal space.

According to a recent study, there is an actual need for bigger apartments for grandparents or the older population. Bigger spaces such as houses with a studio or a granny flat are also recommended so the elderly in our family could regain their personal space and enjoy some privacy. There’s also some prediction about the growth of mixed-use properties, with aged-care living with separate blocks or floors specifically designed for older residents in regular buildings.

In Sydney, apartments side by side with stores, cafes, and restaurants plus medical centers are starting to emerge since it’s going to likely appeal to the older demographic. Another trend such as aged living above the shopping center, public transport hubs, restaurants or cafes. What makes this trend popular is the accessibility among the older population. This way, they remain connected to their families and loved ones, plus stay close to amenities and services they would eventually need.
